Passengers stand on the wings of the Hudson crash plane

“Brace for Impact” 

Composed and focused, the pilot instructed the passengers of US Airways Flight 1549 to get ready for their impending plane crash. Within seconds, the plane would crash into the Hudson River, but for once, all passengers would survive.

I’m sure you have all seen the remarkable photo of the survivors standing on the wing of the airplane, a nearly biblical image of men and women appearing to stand on water. (Certainly an image that will remain in my mind’s eye for a long time to come.) The event has been called miraculous, but ever-the-atheist, I dislike using this word, and would prefer to credit the skills and calm reactions of the captain and his crew. Passengers report that they remained quiet, and simply watched their fate unfold. One passenger had sufficient possession of his faculties to remember switching on his phone. Perhaps the GPS signal would help others locate his dead body. 

But they did not die. Each and every one survived. And I have learned something fascinating from their reports. I had always assumed that these situations would raise mass hysteria, and that the frenzy would only end with death. In fact, in an earlier blog post on the most recent Batman movie, The Dark Knight, I criticized the movie’s portrayal of the reaction of a large group of people in the face of impending death. I was convinced that people would panic, scream and run around frantically like headless chickens. Now I know that I was wrong.

Just wanted to share the following list of search terms with you, that led people to my blog yesterday;

Do you have white countertops or a white sink? A white surface with an absolutely impossible stain? Well, I certainly did, up until today. Like many of you, I live in a (rental) home with cheap white countertops and a cheap white double sink. After only three months, the sink in this fairly new house turned from sparkly new white to a disgusting collection of brown stains. 

I scrubbed and scrubbed. Used every possible cleaning method, but still those brown stains would not come out of our white sink and counter. I was almost completely convinced that these stains would never come out, and that I would be paying a hefty replacement fee to the rental company. Desperate to find the solution, I scoured the interwebs. (After all, if the internet doesnt know, then who will?) And suddenly I came across several stories about a miracle cure.

A miracle cure?? Yup. And it’s simpler than you might think. In fact, you probably have it lying in your cupboard right now. What’s it called?

TARN-X

Yup, that silver polish stuff. I admit, I was skeptical at first, thinking my stains were probably worse than those of the housewives who’d used Tarn-X. But I gave it a try anyway. And here is the result, in photos, so you can see the evidence.

I came across the following test that tried to tell me that I am secretly biased towards all kinds of things. The tests cover groups such as thin vs fat, gay vs straight, etc. The makers of the test claim that the tests show a clear bias against black people. Are the testtakers biased though… or the makers???

You’d think Harvard would produce more scientific work… Upon completing my first test, I had a very strong suspicion that I’d been conditioned to associate good with one group, and bad with the other, during the first half of the test. When they are then switched in the second half of the test, this bias endures obviously. This is only natural.

My suspicions were confirmed when EVERY test showed that I have a “natural” bias for one group over the other, this group ALWAYS being the group first associated with good.

For example: When a test associated “fat” with “good” repeatedly in the first half, and “thin” with “bad” (switched in the second half), the outcome was that I prefer fat people. However, this is completely untrue, as I can honestly say that I have a strong preference for thin people. I think obesity is disgusting and unhealthy (especially in the photos they showed), and even though I am fat, I would much rather be thin! Clearly I do not have a preference for fat people.

Oh yeah, and I apparently have a great preference for black people, Jews, and John McCain. While my most staunchly Republican friend apparently loves Barack Obama, according to Harvard.

Ditto every other test!

Billy Watts, a grandmother of 12 from Murfreesboro, Tennessee found a purse with nearly $100,000 in cash, in the bathroom of a Cracker Barrel restaurant. As an honest (and naive) citizen, she decided to return the money to its rightful owner. Fearful that it might fall into the wrong hands (oh… the irony) she left her number only at Cracker Barrel, with nothing about the contents. 15 minutes later she got a call from the owner. They met up, Billy Watts returned the cash, and declined the $1,000 award after the owner guilttrips her about taking it. Billy Watts is praised as a Good Samaritan and hero in the media for doing “the right thing”.

Now I ask you…

- $100,000 cash

- A purse with no identification or anything in it, just cash

- Left at a cracker barrel (know many rich people who routinely hang around Cracker Barrel bathrooms with copious amounts of cash?)

- The owner insists she needs the money, and can’t really afford to give poor Billy Watts a reward…

So… what kind of people carry copious amounts of cash, in bags with no identification, yet cannot spare a small reward, and hang out in Cracker Barrels? I’ll give you a hint, and it’s in the name CRACKer Barrel. 

Thanks Billy Watts, for not going to the police, or keeping the money for yourself (and I’m sure you could use it), but instead making sure you did the right thing:  Ensuring the drug money drop was successful. Them folks from Tennessee sure are smart.

He? A disgusting heavily balding 45 year old man, who doesn’t look too upset in the video, and undoubtedly met her on an internet-mail-order-bride-website. 

She? 19 years old (now 22) when she began “dating” the middle aged man. Young, poor. Undoubtedly in desperate need of money and an American visa. Only been in America for 2 days. You may call it dating, I call it a very lengthy business arrangement between a prostitute and a gross old guy whom nobody else wants to date.

Tragic? I just call it Karma.

De Westerse wereld viert feest: De grote, boze wolf in de vorm van George W. Bush en zijn neo-conservatieve aanhang is eindelijk verslagen, en door niemand minder dan een zwarte ‘Messiah’ genaamd Barack Obama. Zijn aantrekkelijke beloftes van ‘change’ brachten het volk samen en verzekerden een ruime overwinning. Tijdens de verkiezingsavond vloeiden de tranen rijkelijk hier in Amerika, bij man en vrouw, terwijl de menigte in Chicago keer op keer de ritmische strijdkreet van hun nieuwe president scandeerde: “Yes, We Can!”. Europa liet een zucht van verlichting: Amerika heeft eindelijk het ‘licht’ gezien, althans, het licht waarin Europa de wereld graag ziet.

De campagne van Barack Obama richtte zich grotendeels op het samenbrengen van Democraten en Republikeinen in de hoop de economische crisis af te remmen en de verwaterde diplomatische banden tussen Amerika en de rest van de wereld te herstellen. Het volk, zo stelde Obama, was verdeeld  door de controversiele beslissingen van het cabinet Bush, en als men eerst deze kloof kan sluiten, zal de ‘change’ vanzelf volgen. Deze retoriek, samen met beloftes van belastingverlaging en betere gezondheidszorg, werd klakkeloos aangenomen door een groot aantal Obama supporters, in de veronderstelling dat de praktijk later wel uitgezocht zou worden. Filmpjes van Obama’s aanhangers verschenen op het internet, waarin zij meedeelden dat ze zich “eindelijk geen zorgen meer hoefden te maken over benzine, de hypotheek, en belasting”. Kortom: een utopie.

De werkelijkheid is een stuk somberder voor Amerika, en het zal ongetwijfeld jaren duren voordat het duidelijk wordt of Obama’s aanpak wel echt “change” is. Hij won weliswaar een significante meerderheid van de stemmen, maar was het volk eigenlijk zo gescheiden onder Bush als Obama ons wijsmaakte? Recentelijk heerste er veel ontevredenheid over Bush. Zijn acht jaren brachten echter tevens een tijd van ongekende samenhorigheid in Amerika:  De gebeurtenissen van 11 September 2001 brachten het hele volk, van het conservatieve Texaanse platteland tot het linkse Noord Westen, tot de nuchtere stad New York, samen in hun strijd tegen het moslim extremisme. Niets is tenslotte effectiever in het versterken van een gevoel van nationale eenheid, dan het zwartmaken van een gedeelde vijand. Hermann Goering, NAZI politicus, zei al in 1946 dat de overheid slechts het volk moet vertellen dat ze worden aangevallen, en dat de pacifisten met hun afwijkende mening de nationale veiligheid in gevaar brengen. Zo bracht ook George W. Bush het Amerikaanse volk samen tegen de vijand. Democraat of Republikein, de grote meerderheid voelde een roeping tot eenheid. Pas toen de oorlog oneindig leek te worden, en de economie ineens bergafwaarts ging, ging men op zoek naar een nieuwe zondebok.

De vraag is daarom: Hoeveel ‘change’ brengt Obama eigenlijk? Obama bracht het volk samen in de verkiezingen, maar wederom tegen een gedeelde vijand. Als zondebok werd president Bush het doelwit van alle frustratie over de oorlog en de economie. Door Obama te ondersteunen, zagen de Amerikaanse stemmers een kans om zich af te zetten tegen Bush en daarmee zich te ontdoen van schuld aan de huidige situatie. Het feit dat zij zelf hadden bijgedragen aan de problemen door twee keer op Bush te stemmen, en door hypotheken en leningen af te sluiten die zich niet konden veroorloven, werd verloochend. Degenen die Bush verdedigden of een andere economische aanpak voorstelden, werden snel het zwijgen opgelegd door de juichende massas van obama fans. Tenslotte is het onpatriotisch om tegenspraak te leveren.

Het huwelijk is voltrokken tussen de Democratische en Republikeinse families en de vete die Bush zou hebben veroorzaakt lijkt voorlopig begraven. De komende paar maanden zal men kunnen genieten van de ‘honeymoon’, terwijl Obama zijn kabinet samenstelt. Echter, tijdens de afgelopen dagen begonnen Obama en zijn aanhangers reeds het vuur van enthousiasme te doven: “Die verandering komt wel, maar het gaat een paar jaar duren.” Het begin van de teleurstelling volgde hier in Indiana, een staat die voor het eerst in ruim 40 jaar, en eigenlijk met veel twijfel, nog net democratisch stemde. Die teleurstelling zal ongetwijfeld groeien tijdens Obama’s eerste jaar als president van de ‘Verenigde’ Staten.  Historisch gezien zagen bijna alle nieuw gekozen presidenten hun populariteit vallen tijdens hun eerste jaar, waarin het duidelijk werd dat campagnebeloftes makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan worden. In het geval van Obama is dit problematischer dan voor zijn voorgangers: De schatkist is leeg, de schulden zijn hoger dan ooit, Irak lijkt een bodemloze, geldzuigende put te zijn, en de Dow Jones daalde verder na de verkiezing.

Als eerste zwarte president ligt er extra veel druk op Obama en als hij zijn beloften niet waar weet te maken, zou het wel eens een lange tijd kunnen zijn voordat er weer een Democraat wordt verkozen. Maar met een beetje geluk, kan hij zijn problemen  afschuiven op zondebok Bush en de ‘rommel’ die hij heeft achtergelaten in het Witte Huis.
